What does spiritual awakening mean? In what sense are we asleep when we understand ourselves as the most advanced species in this universe?

To be asleep simply means to be unaware; unaware of the automated response and reactions, unaware of our own conditioning and unaware of rapidly changing nature of things around us.

An awakening means to be aware of our sleepiness, our conditioning, our static and unchanging state of mind towards our millions of years of habits.

A spiritual awakening simply means becoming free of one's conditioned living.

We also understand that we have an innate spiritual need, just as real and viable as our emotional and physical needs. The fulfilling of that need is often described as a spiritual awakening. It is not a matter of being asleep, but of awareness. The experience is often described as being like we have suddenly awakened from a deep sleep, gradually becoming aware of and seeing clearly our spiritual surroundings that have been there all along. Christians sometimes refer to this as the infilling of the Holy Spirit and it is the reason we are certain that God exists and desires an ongoing, loving and dynamic Spiritual relationship with us. Only the living God can fill this void, this feeling that something is missing, that we sense within us. He fills it with Himself. There is nothing we can do to earn or deserve this new relationship with Him. Countless people for thousands of years have found that there is only one exclusive way God has provided for us all... through Jesus Christ, who He is and what He has done.

We might be the most advanced species, (but definitely the most arrogant), in this universe, but God's Word says we are spiritually dead until we are born again of the Holy Spirit? Apparently being the most advanced species will not guarantee us a place in heaven

"And do this because you know the season, that it is already the hour for you to awake from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than at the time when we became believers. 12 The night is well along; the day has drawn near. Let us therefore throw off the works belonging to darkness and let us put on the weapons of the light. 13 Let us walk decently as in the daytime, not in wild parties and drunkenness, not in immoral intercourse and brazen conduct, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not be planning ahead for the desires of the flesh" (Romans 13:11-14. Bible).

It means that one is aware of God's Holy Spirit.. !!
