Christians: Why did Jesus commit his spirit into the hands of God just before he died on the cross?

Every person has a spirit. It is very so much better that it be in the Hands of God. Jesus knew and pre-planned that His Spirit should go to God. His resurrected body became one with His Spirit 3 days later. The bible says: "absent from the body, present with The Lord." This is the path for all believers in Jesus Christ. Unbelievers, will find themselves at The Great White Throne Judgement facing eternal darkness and gnashing of teeth, where the worm never dies.

Because He had finished the work God had given Him to do and was ready to return to His presence. His Father, God, assigned Him the difficult task of atoning for all of us and He had finished His work. It was time to go home to His Father and our Father, to His God and our God.

If one is making up a story about a Hero, one should have the Hero saying Heroic things at dramatic moments.
Entirely POSSIBLE that there was a man named Jesus, who was executed by the Romans as some kind of troublemaker and about whom Heroic stories and legends arose.
There certainly was a man named Davy Crockett, who was elected to Congress from the American state of Tennessee, and about whom Heroic stories and legends arose.
And, Disney's film notwithstanding, Davy NEVER DID team up with Mike Fink, to battle river pirates.
Mr. Melvin Gibson's film notwithstanding, there is a good possibility that many of the Jesus stories are also just Heroic legends.

Luke was a disciple of Paul. Neither Luke nor Paul were around when the original Christians were reinventing messianic Judaism so when Luke was writing his "gospel" he merely regurgitated the new anti-Semitic doctrines that had been designed by Paul to appeal to Gentiles used to other gods and non-Judaic religious beliefs and cultures.

It was an admission of trust.
He trusted God to get him out of the bonds of death.

Cause he wanted to, just as Stephen did when he was being stoned to death. He was committing himself into the hands of God. Showing he trusted in and surrendered fully to God.

Mythologically, it was an act of submission to his "God / Father", which is made very clear in the Christian scriptures........

As any policeman will tell you, if you are going to tell a lie then keep it simple, otherwise it will wind up being silly and transparent.
