The pain is minor. And no your not put to sleep. It's a quick procedure. And as long as you keep yourself clean and medicated there, the healing process is fairly quick.

You will be given an anaesthetic for the circumcision itself. Some doctors will insist on using a general, which will put you out completely, but it is better to have only a local anaesthetic so you feel nothing but it doesn't upset your system like a general does.
There will be some discomfort (not real pain) for a week or so afterwards, but this can easily be covered by ordinary 'headache' tablets.
There is also some useful advice on the post-op care of a new circumcision, including reducing the potential discomfort of nocturnal erections, to be found at http://www.circinfo.com/post-op_care/care.html
The small degree of discomfort is, however, well worthwhile for the long term benefits that you get from being circumcised.

You should be nervous because it's going to hurt. A lot. I hope when you get it done, they don't put you to sleep, so that you can feel the pain.

A friend of mine had it done when he was 21 and he said it hurt like hell for a week or two.
