Scottish voting age lowered to 16. Did this produce the anticipated result?

In Scotland, the voting age was reduced to 16 for the first time in a UK election, after its successful introduction in the recent independence referendum.

Considering that the pro unionists won the referendum, and the Conservative party has done well in the Holyrood elections are these young voters a touch more right wing that was expected?

Possibly. Or possibly not. It didn't do the SNP any good, that's for sure, and they were the party that lowered the voting age. So you could be right.

The trouble is that the voter turnout was only 55.6%, and there is no way of telling if it was significantly different for 16-18 year olds, or how they voted. And how many of them are there compared with the number of over 18s? In the absence of any data, the only thing I can do is decline to answer. Admittedly that is reminiscent of Sir Humphrey Appleby's favourite answer "Yes and no", but there are no facts to work on because the necessary facts were not collected.

The intriguing thing is that the referendum was lost from the SNP point of view, and yet the Scottish electorate keep voting SNP - it lost a few seats at Holyrood but it was still only slightly short of an overall majority, and well, what happened last year in Scotland at the general election can only be described as an SNP landslide. Where's the logic? I can only guess that there is a significant number of voters who want more powers for Scotland but don't want to go all the way to independence. And the coalition government did something about that, so perhaps some Scottish voters felt happier to vote Conservative because it did.

Wow! I am not sure a 16 year old is mature enough to vote.
