It really depends on what exactly you're interested in seeing and doing. I've been living and working in South Korea for many years. I'm a permanent foreign resident, married, 3 kids, own property and run a business here so I know Korea far better than I do Japan; however, I have visited Japan many times and spent substantial amounts of time there. I've traveled widely and have a pretty in depth knowledge of the cuisine and the history and the culture.

If I were to offer as unbiased an answer as possible, I'd have to say that Japan is probably the better vacation destination. Japan is the larger of the two countries, there's more nature - aesthetically, it's a far more beautiful country. Its forests and mountains, seacoast and islands are definitely more picturesque than what you can find in Korea. There's more wilderness. It's less built up. The cities are far cleaner. The food is better overall. Japan preserves its history better - the monuments, temples, castles and historical sites are far better maintained and less artificial than their Korean counterparts. But it's more difficult for inexperienced foreigners to travel through Japan. Trains and buses are more expensive and the distances between cities and towns are greater than those in Korea. Traffic moves on the opposite side of the road so unless you're from the UK or the Commonwealth, driving in Japan is not something that I would recommend while there for a holiday. The Japanese system of orthography is far more complex and cumbersome than Korean Hangeul. Korean Hangeul can be learned in a relatively short amount of time making it easier to read menus, purchase train tickets, read street signs, etc., whereas in Japan this is virtually impossible as they use three separate writing systems interchangeably. Not to mention that there is far more English to be found in Korea. Japan is more expensive overall, but the differences in cost are not as wide as they used to be between Japan and Korea. Prices in Korea have increased exponentially over the years. Koreans are more friendly and quicker to help foreigners than the Japanese are.

If you were to vacation in either country, with the proper planning you could have a wonderful time. While there's far more to see in Japan, Korea doesn't get anywhere near as many tourists so there's more novelty to visiting. But if you're going to twist my arm, you have two weeks and you need to choose one: Go to Japan. But again, Korea would be great too so long as you do a bit of research. It's far easier to get around and overall it's a more convenient vacation destination. It all depends on what you're looking to see and do.

either is nice, but Japan is more expensive, if money in not an issue go to Japan, if money is an issue go to South Korea.
