what is the ring of truth?

I can't speak to other fields, but in law it is a term of art referring to the credibility assessment of a witness ( or written testimony). When evaluating a witness, does his testimony make sense? Does it lack internal contradiction that can't be explained. If there is something in the testimony that can't be explained in itself does the testimony, when taken as a whole, allow a reasonable trier of fact to ignore the problem in the face of the rest ( for example, I had a witness that swore up and down that something happened on the last day of a month and was followed, the next day by something that happened the next day that, after repeated attempts for clarification, was the first day of a month not following the one she mentioned. Redirect "how much education have you had" answer, "my father said education was for boys." Result, poor girl is confused and if she was faking would have tried to correct herself rather than being blissfully ignorant she s making a mistake.), does it sound rehearsed, can they provide spontaneous detail without pause as if to think of something, etc, etc.

A most interesting book written by Canon J.B Phillips. (The expression derives from metallurgy, such as bell-casting, when a flawless cast has a clean musical ring to it whereas a flawed one does not.)
