What's the purpose of insurance? Self pay people get a sale of sorts when they get labs drawn?

    Historically, the main purpose is for the big things. Big things like spending 8 days in the ICU at $10,000 per day or getting cancer and paying $15,000 per month for care for 2 years.

    Little things like lab work don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Negotiated charges are just a small benefit.
