Today is the first day of Ramadan.?
As a non-Muslim, I have a question. Sunrise in Anchorage Alaska is 4:26AM and sunset is at 11:31PM. 19 hours. And equally, in winter, the amount of night is only 6 hours, not much of a 'fast'. How does Islam handle the difference, as it would not have been something of concern to the nascent religion 15 centuries ago.

Indeed I agree that some countries have less fasting hours and others have more. But you must know one thing as brother stated above the reward will be higher for those people fasting longer. Example Denmark will be fasting 21 hours..... Their reward will be more.....In sha Allah.... Those countries with less fasting hours will also have their rewards...

SalamIf a Muslim lives in Alaska with irregular seasons he/her must fast in the time of the start and end of the nearest place such as in Canada for sehri and iftar and also prayers.

Salam, may Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) guide you.
People are required to fast from sunrise to sunset, the more difficult it is for them the higher their reward, the easier it is for them, then they should be thankful, in both situations it is a test, there are parts of the world where it is 24/7 daylight, in which case, I believe they follow the fasting times of mecca.
