The same way right-wing conservative christians reconcile their feelings towards the Florida shooting.
People died - and that's bad.
But they were gay - so that's good. Except they might've been able to be converted, so it's kind of sad.
Meanwhile the shooter was muslim, and that's bad - but he killed gays, so that's good. Plus they could use this tragedy to perpetuate anti-mulsim bigotry and score political points, so that's good.
But then it comes out that the shooter was gay too - so then they are confused, because if he was gay, then how could he be muslim because muslims hate gays - while at the same time gays don't hate gays.
In the end, they just split the difference and blame Obama.

What "contradictory ideologies" do you have in mind?
Islam is about individual choice. As it's individuals who will answer for themselves before God.

One would think it must be tough for them, but some people just see what they want to see. In Europe we call them "halalhippies". I don't know if you have the same expression in the US? They will deny all negative facts about islam and that's it.

Generally, those whose personal beliefs conflict with Islamic beliefs (progressives, feminists, LGBT activists, etc.) , but who defend Islam anyway simply construct a narrative about Islam not being the motivation for Muslim violence, and instead they claim that Muslim violence is a response to Western violence. (See also, morons like Chomsky)
Of course, every page of history proves that wrong.
From the end of WW2 through the 1970s, no one did more to help Muslim countries than the US....and all we got for the effort was global jihad fueled by petrol dollars.
It's important to remember that the US used to be on the Arab side of the Israeli-Arab dispute. Only as the Arab states grew more pro-Soviet (because Soviets were anti-Israel) and aggressive did the US come to defend Israel.
