sata to mini displayport?
I have a laptop with an optical drive that I never use, and i believe it uses a sata. Could I get a sata to mini displayport and run an external GPU?

No, SATA is not designed for video. Your laptop should have a video out. It could be VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt or some mini variant of these. In a pinch you can use a USB video adapter for basic video usage.
