Why can't we repeal the Dickey Amendment in regards to gun control?

The Dickey Amendment is an NRA backed and Republican pushed amendment that took away funding from the CDC (centers for disease control) to research gun violence in America. This happened 20 years ago and even though many organizations including doctors and even Dickey himself pushed to repeal it it stays in effect. Republicans are always talking about needing proof that stricter gun control laws would lessen gun violence but how can you have proof without research? So for 20 years research into gun violence has been almost nil but the number of incidents seem to be rising. This is just one small step so why can't we do this? What are the arguments against repealing this amendment?

Update:

Allow me to educated some people as a nurse, the CDC tracks all deaths whether its from disease or accidents. They track suicides, gun deaths, heart attacks, motor vehicle accident deaths...everything. And they want to do more research into gun violence but the Dickey Amendment drops their funding for this research by 95%. It states specifically in that the CDC can not research gun violence as a means to promote gun control. Now why would the NRA be so interested in stopping research?

Update 2:

“The original concern from the National Rifle Association back in 1996, which Dr. Rivara mentioned, made that very implication,” says Zwillich. “The NRA complained to Congress that the CDC was using the results of its research to essentially advocate for gun control. They called it propaganda. And back at that time, Congress slashed the CDC’s funding by the exact amount that was used for gun-related public health research.

Update 3:

Also, as a pediatric nurse, its routine to ask parents if there is a gun in the house and how is it kept, locked up, not locked up?

I know liberals are easily confused. Allow me to clear something up for them. When a criminal invader gets shot by a homeowner, and the homeowner says the intruder died from "lead poisoning", that's a reference to lead bullets, it's not to be taken literally...it's not really poison, and the intruder didn't die from a disease.

The CDC needs to focus on diseases, not firearms.

Why should we repeal the Dickey Amendment?

Guns and gun violence can still be studied by the Justice Department, by Universities, and by various NGOs.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has no business studying guns or gun violence. Seriously, the CDC studying guns makes about as much sense as the FBI studying Ebola or the Zika Virus.

Why would the Center of DISEASE control research gun violence??? Next thing you are going to tell me is that we shoudl have astronauts not going to space but researching global warming.

Why would the CDC feel they have a right to talk advise on gun control in the first place?

I think the DOJ can hande it without the CDC getting involved.

Gun ownership is a right, not a disease. Murder is a crime, not a disease.

sure we can if the NRA owned congress would let its members vote their common sense.
