Is it hard to write a short story about a mind reader?

I was always told to "show not tell" when I wirte creatively. But if I write about someone with mind powers how will it show? Is there a way I can hint at the character being able to read minds without plainly saying it?

Imagine being a mindreader Kayla ... of course some thoughts are transmitted more strongly than others (the more complicated a thought, the more difficult it is to read) ... EEK, the deluge of XXX rated thoughts from most men and some women when they see you!

Which means that any mindreader will develop an automatic filter (comparable to how we deal with sound; when you go somewhere else it's the unfamiliar sounds as well as the lack of some familiar sounds that make it hard to sleep). Though not an absolute filtering; it'd result in the mindreader treating some people differently - and THAT BEHAVIOUR is key.

So have your clairvoyant not reacting the way others from her peer group do; e.g. when they go to a concert by their favourite Boyband she does NOT scream when singer <insert name> comes on stage, instead she grows quiet.

In the old TV series MASH, Radar got his name from answering questions before they were asked.

No because the story is now in your hands. Whatever you want the mind reader to pick up now he/she will pick up on now. It's your choice.

Whether or not you decide to have the mind reader share what he gets from people right away all comes down to choice.

The 'show not tell' mantra does not mean you have to leave your readers to guess most of the story. Telling has its place.

Yes, but it takes planing and forethought.

For example, how does the reader KNOW your character can read minds if you don't just tell him so? What can your MC say that will let the reader know he is reading minds?
