Elementary school ginger cookies poisonous?

I remember my teacher telling us not to eat those gingerbread cookies shaped like hearts and Christmas trees etc.

She said they were poisonous and we'd get sick if they ate them because it was raw ginger. But raw ginger isn't poisonous I don't think. The cookies were too hard to eat, unlike gingerbread. What were they made of?

Is it possible that she was talking about "decorative cookies" that are sometimes made as a project to be taken home to hang on the tree. (Like kids could do that nowdays..NOT!)

The "cookies could have been made from a variety of spices and an abundance of them as well so the fragrance would last.

I have seen recipes for "cookies" like that and it calls for applesauce and an equal amount of cinnamon as well as a bit of ginger. the dough is mixed up and then cut into shapes then air dried or oven dried.

While not poison they sure would not be good to eat.

Um, raw ginger's not poisonous, but how would the ginger even stay raw if you BAKED the cookies?

raw ginger is not poisonous and doesn't usually make people sick unless they are allergic to ginger. Not sure what your teacher was refering to but we don't use raw ginger in cookies! We use dehydrated powdered ginger! Some ginger snaps are hard as rocks and some are not. Shape does not matter either.

Your teacher was apparently susceptible to legends, not facts.
