Was the Schutztruppe, German colonial troops, ever romanticised by the German Public like the French Foreign legion was by its own public?

Perhaps not as much, although in WWI, they were probably the most successful of all the German troops. Their commander Lieutenant Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, later General, was a brilliant tactician who kept British and French forces much larger than his own very busy throughout the war. Lettow-Vorbeck also had another claim to fame. In 1935, the Nazi Party offered him the ambassadorship to the Court of St. James, he told them, and I quote, to "go **** yourself."
