If milli means 1000, why is a million 1,000,000?

    It's 1,000 thousand.

    The word is derived from the early Italian millione (milione in modern Italian), from mille, "thousand", plus the augmentative suffix -one (which multiplies it)

    kilo means 1000

    milli means 1/1000

    mega means 1000000

    This is at the heart of the debate of why 1,000 times a million is (the rest of the world) or is not (the UK) a billion.

    Because that is how standards organizations defined it.
