Why do my eyes get dry spots when I lie down at night?

Update:

It starts before I fall asleep so it's not my eyes staying open while I sleep. I suddenly get dry spots on the top half of my eye balls. I have no problem when I'm awake during the day. The only explanation the optometrist gives me is "gravity" which is stupid since I've been exposed to gravity all my life and this just started at the age of 54.

When you get older, everything starts to "thin out"; skin, hair, tissues in your eye-- It's actually pretty common to get dry eyes only at night, but if it was constant (happening during the day, too.. another sign of dry eyes is a strange, cold feeling in your eyes), I'd suspect Dry Eye Syndrome. Probably not anything you can do to fix it permanently, but you can take lubricating eye drops. Just not Visine's crap.

Source(s): Went to the hospital with severely dry, burning, itching eyes just two nights ago.. was prescribed Lacrilube (a gel ointment for your eyes), am instead taking eyedrops to lubricate my eyes and reduce redness and dryness. Seriously, don't get Visine. Get another brand.
