Where does the story of Job fit in with the image of a kind and loving God?

Yes, Job was rewarded in the end with wealth, beautiful daughters and longevity but God willingly exposed an innocent to so much torment and suffering he wished he was ever born.

Not only that but Jobs 10 children were killed and who knows how many innocent servants who were killed with Jobs oxen, sheep and caramels.

All of this death, suffering and torment because what, God lifted Jobs protection to prove a point with Satan that Job didn't didn't just worship God while in prosperity? How is that justified?

Update:

Why are so many of you ignoring that fact that God ALLOWED JOBS CHILDREN TO DIE TO TEST HIM? How does that not make you angry?

Thank God for the story of Job, and the love God showed mankind by allowing us to all see a glimpse of how the battle for our very souls works in the heavenly realms.

From that story, we find out that just because bad things happen to people does not necessarily mean that those people did anything wrong (Lk 16:19-24). It also shows how we can really show how much we love God when we love him even in the bad times. And the story shows that the momentary troubles of this life are NOT what life is all about (2Cor 4:17).

Job fits in perfectly with the plagues in Egypt (kill all the firstborns - like Job's children etcetera) and the Flood (drown everybody!) and Sodom and Gomorrah (kill everyone) ..... loads of killing by God, with just a few survivors who (except for Lot's wife) continued to sing the praises of God the Genocidal, God the Butcher, God the childslayer ....

.... and in the sequel, God finally achieves the ultimate; getting his own son killed. Well, that's what you have to do in a sequel isn't it, "go one better".

It doesn't fit at all. The story depicts a cruel and petty god who effed up Job's life on a stupid bet.

Job kept his integrity to his heavenly father, and Job was rewarded with double of what

he lost and lived a long happy life. He also has the hope of the children that had passed

in the storm to be resurrected when Jesus calls them from the memorial tombs.

Job was slandered by Satan to God. God had to allow Job to stand before his accuser and show Satan that Satan was wrong. After that happened and Satan left, God could again bless Job.

This is also our story. Mankind has been slandered by Satan before God and God allows us to stand before our accuser and prove him wrong and then when we die, God will bless us again.
