Why did Goku do better in his fight with cell than Trunks and vegeta?

Goku just stayed in super saiyan form.

Vegeta used rank 1 knowing ultra would slow him down so aside from the final flash why did goku get more hits in?

Trunks lost because he used ultra and was too slow

Update:

I mean why wouldn't an ascended saiyan do better than a basic super saiyan? No speed is hindered. It was just a better version of regular super saiyan

    At all points in time during the series, Goku is always just a bit stronger than Vegeta, unless there is some mitigating factor (like the heart virus).

    Also, normally, being in Super Saiyan form is physically taxing. Goku and Gohan trained to be able to stay in SS form for increased durations, effectively eliminating that issue. Vegeta did not. So Vegeta would wear out more quickly.

    I think it may have to do with the fact that Goku and Gohan trained together, so got stronger. Where as Vegeta and Trunks most likely trained alone.
