What exactly is "manual" about a "manual"? Where did it get that dumb name?

It's a manually shifting gear transmission, instead of an "automatic." Manual-Gas, brake, and clutch.

You're manually (by hand) shifting the transmission into whatever gear up or down. As opposed to it automatically shifting up/down based on your speed.

Or if you're talking about a manual as in instructions...I have no idea.

Used to be called "Standard", as automatics were optional.

Now that automatics are so popular, the PC crowd has gone to the term "manual" - as you manually move the lever to change gears.
