A UK passport is proof of citizenship.

A UK passport is for UK citizens. A UK residence permit, I dn't know what that is. Is it an ILR visa? That is for non-citizens who have permission to live in the UK.

You can apply for a permanent residence card after you’ve lived in the UK for 5 years. This will prove your right to live in the UK permanently.

UK passport you have to be a British citizen/national to apply for one

A U.K residence permit just gives you permission to reside in the U.K legally

A U.K passport means you are an actual U.K citizen because passports are for citizens ONLY

The permit (indefinite leave to remain) is an addition to your legal permissions - you can stay BUT you do not get UK nationality and nor do your children. You MAY after the required period apply for naturalization.

Holding a UK passport is proof of UK citizenship and the RIGHT to reside.
