How does the Golden Gate Bridge kill people?
So I've heard all these stories of people jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge to commit suicide, but I'm just not sure how that works. I understand that from a height like that, water would become very dangerous, but why don't cliff jumpers always die? (I understand they sometimes do but most bridge jumpers die). And also, wouldn't the water be more giving that concrete? How do people die simply by jumping into water?

Competitive cliff jumpers jump from heights about 59 feet to 85 feet. If you are well trained, and the water is safe, a dive into that water will not kill you. The golden gate bridge, however, is 220 feet. A fall from that height into water will most likely kill you.

Water is not giving at terminal velocity. In fact, it's nearly as hard as concrete when you hit it going that fast. Mythbusters tested this using accelerometers.
