Was this ginger or something else?

My Chinese friend made a large pot of food for us. It seemed pretty simple, pieces of chicken, corn, maybe some potatoes thrown in and all boiled together. But the chicken and broth had a strong flavor that I wasn't a huge fan of. It was kind of herbal, almost licorice or cough syrup in scent and taste. I ate it because it wasn't terrible but all the other Chinese people ate it up. Was this ginger in there that gave this strong flavor?

It was probably anise, or 5-spice.

Star Anise will give a licorice flavor to something. Many a Asian soups or 1 pot meals have a few Star Anise pods placed in the pot to infuse flavor.

Ginger will give a peppery flavor and it is a flavor that you would recognize or at least in your mind it would be familiar to you. Not a cough syrup flavor at all.

Ginger generally does not have a taste like you described, it usually has a rather floral, almost citrus-y kind of essence. I wonder if your friend used cilantro or maybe tarragon, as both of those have a rather licorice-y flavor? If there were bits that looked like green leaves diced up it might have been either of those.

Probably star anise. It's used in authentic Chinese cooking a lot, but rarely in Americanized takeout.
