Information about being a kendergarten teacher?
I'm 18, and I'm really starting to like the idea of being a kindergarten teacher, but I'd like more information before I completely make up my mind. It's been so long since I've been in kindergarten, I barley remember anything. Also, I actually have no clue about what you teacher kindergarteners, I believe you teach them reading and math, but I'm not sure if that's all you teach them.
Thanks for any information you can give me. This was kinda a spur of the moment thing, but I'd really like to look into it more, and know more about it before I jump in.

These days, kindergarteners are learning a lot of things that used to be delayed until the first grade -- reading and basic arithmetic, for example. Of course, much depends on the school, but the fact that so many kids now attend nursery school has meant that they get a lot of formerly kindergarten-related teaching before they ever get to kindergarten, so now they're getting more academic instruction in kindergarten proper.
But another important aspect of kindergarten is social skills -- getting along with others, working in groups, appropriate classroom behavior, and so forth.
Finally, kindergarten teachers play an important role in terms of identifying early learning problems and other issues from which a child may be suffering. This is really essential work.
I think it's a great career. I had an aunt who taught kindergarten for many years and loved it.

You will need to study Early Child Development, complete coursework and student teaching internships under the supervision of a licensed teacher, then you will have to apply for your state's teaching licensure test, which are similar to the ACT or SAT, in that they are several hours long. Kindergarten involves teaching the alphabet, sight words, sounds (phonics), basic math including counting, addition, subtraction.
