Are you supposed to send thank you note after interview?
Just wondering because I know of people who said they never sent one and they still get job offers. So it seems pointless to do when they still give job offers to whoever does not send one.

Depends entirely on how bad you want the job.
Don't listen to some of the other people here, calling to follow up on the status of your application is not a bad thing. Often times, you may not like the answer you get but it's important to always be professional. This shows that you want the job.
Seriously, if I'm a hiring manager, and I interview 2 people: The first guy is somebody who did well in the interview, but didn't seem overly interested. The second guy was super attentive in the interview, answered all the questions correctly, and called me after about a week to ask about the status of his application, I obviously will be more inclined to go after the second guy because he seems like he wants the opportunity more, which means he will perform better.
DON'T make the mistake of being desperate. Use your head, establish a deadline in the interview. How long do you think I should wait to hear from you? 1 week. Don't call until after 1 week. Don't call multiple times only to get the same answer. There is a very thin line between seeming like you're interested, and being annoying.

No, just say thank you for the interview. I've had quite a few interviews and I've only had feedback from two, so I don't see the point in sending a thank you note in. I have a two week work placement lined up though, so things are looking up on the job front.

You want the job? Send a hand written thank you note to every person who sat down with you.
It gives you the opportunity to reiterate why you are the best person for the job. It get's you more "mind time" because employers interview a lot of candidates.
Put yourself in the employers shoes. If I'm a hiring manager, I walk in after a long weekend, tired, and I check my mail. I see a HAND WRITTEN envelope addressed to my attention. I'm going to push everything aside and open it.
Its a way to stand out amongst the other candidates.

Only if you want the job. They may offer it anyhow but it is a good way to say one more thing to them and remind them of you. I have seen it work, we interviewed someone over qualified and decided not to hire her. She send a note and we decided if she really wanted the job we may as well hire her. My last job I thought I was hired for sure, first interview went great, second was scheduled for the next day. Second interview the president of the company said he had to meet me since my boss was so excited to find me. I waited a day or two and emailed a note. My boss emailed back they were going to decide on Friday, then Friday that they weren't ready yet. My email made it easy for him to keep me in the loop then when they decided what to offer they left me a voice mail saying they were ready to offer and call them if they didn't call me first. They might have hired me without the thank you email but it did make it smoother.

I just read all the answers. It is amazing how varied they are.
My advice is for you to send a charming THANK YOU note.
But, do NOT call them to ask of the status of your interview. Do not call. That will tell them that you are desperate and weak. Just do not call. Don't let the curiosity force you into making that mistake.

I think its tasteful and nice.
Its a great way to let the interviewer know that you are still interested in the position without asking them when you will be called back about a job.

I still do, not because it is done that frequently these days but because I want to stand out among the other candidates. A thank-you note might remind him of who I was and the kind of employee I will be.

Definitely yes. Do because it is the polite thing to do, and also because hardly anyone does it, so you will stand out and make a good impression. I used to hire people so I know. I always put the thank-you notes at the top of the pile because I knew the people who write them and the ones who take the extra time and trouble, so they will be good employees.

It is not necessary. Any interview emails or calls are from the companies' end if they find you suitable. So you can respond to their emails or phone calls on demand, else leave off with it.

If you really, really want the job, send a personal handwritten note. Make sure everything is spelled correctly and grammatical, and that your message is polite, enthusiastic and in no way can be misconstrued. In other words, make sure you give the "right" impression.
