I used a small boat horn as described in Ray McSoley's book on dog training. It worked like a charm. Only had to use it once or twice. Rather than have my description of how-to be misunderstood, or get sued for quoting from the book without permission, I suggest that you search for the book online. The name of the book is DOG TALES.

How about putting the dog in a different room with the door closed before opening your front door?
Then, once everyone is inside and calm, let him out.

Training, try it and/or seek professional help for yourself on how to train a dog properly before it injures someone, and you're sued.
Choose an area in your home and train the dog to go to 'place' and remain there until you release him.

How about a novel idea that involves a prong collar and a strong enough correction to leave a lasting impression?

If he doesnt have a solid sit you use a choke chain and you correct him. Its no different from a loud noise, jangly metal keys or throwing something soft at him. Its a correction. Do it correctly and you dont have to do it often.

the old fashioned way.........you restrain the dog via collar and leash...when the dog wants to jump up you pull him down saying sternly, no...you do this repeatedly after a time he will get the message.
