Let x - greater number and y- lesser number
"The sum of two numbers is 31" so
x+y =31 <--eq.1
"twice the lesser number is 6 less than twice the greater number" so
2y = 2x - 6 or by simplifying:
y = x-3 <--eq.2
We can now solve for x&y:
Substituting eq.2 to eq.1:
x+y =31
x+(x-3) =31
2x - 3 =31
2x = 34
x = 17
Therefore,
y = 14
The numbers are 17 and 14 <--ANSWER
