Should people possess common sense, especially when it comes to being pulled over by a law enforcement officer (LEO)?

Full disclosure: My father was a LEO.

So there's apparently this noise about some female cop shooting someone for reaching inside the vehicle.

Yeah, that's something you don't do. Seems like common sense to me.

Once upon a time in my youth, I was on my way to meet up with a girl I fancied. I was pulled over by a police officer. Rolled down my window, gave (as is required in TX) my license and proof of insurance (no registration necessary; this is not Hollywood - registration is based on license plate and sticker). He goes back to run my info or whatever, and in the meanwhile, I foolishly looked beneath the seats for my cigarettes.

I immediately had a gun pointed directly at me as the LEO screamed at me to show my hands. I nearly s**t myself. I wasn't shot, because I complied immediately with the LEO's orders.

I wasn't shot. I was scared out of my wits, though.

Why did I get off with a warning?

Update:

There are a lot of things you can do before you even encounter the LEO who is pulling you over.

1) Park in an area where you cannot escape, like a parking space where you cannot pull forward and the LEO can block you with his or her cruiser.

2) Roll down your windows completely.

3) Turn on your interior lights.

4) Take your keys out of the ignition and put them on the dash.

5) Keep your hands on the steering wheel.

Update 2:

6) When the LEO asks you for your identification, say where they are. Wait for the LEO's instruction as how to produce said documentation.

7) Don't be a dick. You know you're not going to be shot over being pulled over unless YOU have a problem. Be an adult.

8) Realize that the LEO is doing his or her job. Do you like the rule of law only when it applies to others? If so, then you don't like the rule of law. Suck it up, be an adult, and comply with the LEO's orders. Your day in court is in court

Update 3:

9) The LEO is more scared of you than you are of him/her. He or she is placed in life-threatening situations ALL DAY. Respect that, apply some common sense, and it won't be as bad as you might make it

Because the LEO did his job, that is not always the case. People get shot sometimes anyway. In addition even if you don't follow orders that does not give a LEO the right to shoot an unarmed man running away. They are not judge, jury and executioners ask your father.

If I think I am being given a ticket for a crime I did not commit, I will not give the officer trouble but will do it in court. I have friends who are police officer but not know of any who are policemen.

If you're white it might have given you the edge. The guy in Tulsa that got shot died, carrying with him the reason he did not stop. However, at least one of the cops had a cooler head and used his taser instead of his gun. Why she thought at that instant he needed to die because he was a lethal threat I cannot understand.

He had his arms straight up in the air, not reaching.

And why is the terrorist who planted tons of bombs recovering nicely in the hospital after SHOOTING AT COPS? But this man whose car stalled is now DEAD? Explain that to me if you can.
