Cutting dogs food with veggies?

My dogs are getting older and slower. They still run and play but they are slowly gaining weight. I have cut back food but my female will bark when shes hungry and she does not give up on the idea. I have heard of people giving their dogs less dog food but adding veggies, such as carrots and green beans, to make up the difference. Anyone do this and have success?

    You can add vegetables to the food to help bulk it up without adding calories. Warning that some dogs hate vegetables, others will eat raw or cooked. If you feed peas, corn and carrots it's kind of defeating the purpose as these are high in sugars and calories. Green beans are the lowest snd best liked vegetables, steamed or raw if they will eat them.

    Ask your vet what they think a good filler vegetable would be or see if there is a lower calorie (reduced calorie) food you can switch over to to help with the dogs hunger. I have had the same problem with some of me infirmed elder dogs over the years, 1/2 cup of food just doesn't seem to satisfy their hunger and they get cranky or lay in front of the dishes 24/7 until their bowls full agsin, (their normal 1.5 cup meals.). They do have senior foods thstthat sre less calorie and easier to,digest as well as lower calorie regular foods for dogs thet sre less active or need to start loosing some weight. If you can try and add swimming for your dog which is a great Cardiovascular exerceise without stressing the joints.

    I add green leafy veggies & snaps for health reasons to my dogs' food, at my holistic vet's urging - not for weight loss. The veggies are full of fiber (many kibble foods do not provide enough of) and antioxidents that can help prevent cancer as well as important micro-nutrient vitamins & minerals.

    Dogs are carnivores not omnivores or vegetarians. No need to change their diet.

    Don't allow this poor behavior from you female, corrected it immediately when caught in the act.

    Cut back on the amount you're feeding them, and increase the aerobic exercise, such as playing fetch, walking for elimination is not considered exercise.

    Depending on their age, it maybe time to take them in for a comprehensive geriatric wellness exam.

    Good for you for keeping an eye on your dogs weight. So many people let their older dogs get obese.

    Adding vegetables is a great idea. I've done it before with my dogs. All of mine love green beans. Ic your dog is unsure about them, boil them for a few minutes in low sodium chicken broth.

    Also, be sure to check with your vet about changing your dogs diet and your concern with its weight.

    People have fed cabbage and greens to dogs for centuries. I use carrots, green beans, spinach and any left over green leafy veg such as brocolli from our food. I portion and freeze it, and it bulks out the dogs ration nicely. As others have said it adds iron and other mmicro nutrients without adding calories.

    I know people that do feed green beans to cut calories with success. Most dogs like them, though I had one that didn't.;

    Dogs have pointed teeth meaning that they are meat and not plant eaters
