Do you think I got scammed?

So I was walking by these stores and I see a teenage boy of about 18 sitting outside with a homeless sign. I walked past him and then turned back around and asked him how he was homeless when he was so young. He said his parents kicked him out and he had no friends to rely on. He said it so bitterly that I suspected abuse. His clothes were worn and he looked a little dirty, and I felt bad for him and I gave him 40 bucks.

15 minutes I came out of the grocery store and he was already gone. I wonder, do you think he was faking it?
