guitar strings turning brown?

I bought my guitar on saturday (i live in NZ) and I've had the guitar for 5 days, i played them a lot during the 5 days and i realized that the strings were turning brown (they are turning brown where u normally pluck or strum the strings), most noticeable on the A D and G strings. The brand of my guitar is an Ashton, acoustic guitar.

Update:

is this a bad sign?

Guitar strings are made with brass alloy wire wound around a core. The oil and sweat on your skin is mildly acidic, so it oxidizes the brass, making it turn dark. That is normal.

Also, FYI, the brand of your guitar is completely irrelevant. The type of strings you're using is. Since you seem to be new at this, spend some time researching how to properly maintain your guitar (cleaning it, replacing strings, etc.).

It's normal for it to happen after a few months, but I never heard about them turning brown in 5 days... Crappy strings maybe? Or maybe you're playing with dirty hands.

As long as the strings still have good tone, don't worry about it. When it's time to replace the strings I'd suggest you try a set of coated strings, such as Elixir brand.

Could be several things that could lend themselves to apparent rust/corrosion:

    - Might be "older" strings on your new guitar, esp if it was displayed/demoed in a store. (Change.)

    - Might be not playing with clean hands and wiping the strings down when done. (Always do both.)

    - Might be accelerated by salty coastal air, there. (Keep it cased.)

  • Sounds normal. Give the strings time. They could just be kinda cheap, but as long as it sounds good, i think youre fine.
