What makes new brake shoes on old rotors squeal? Is there anything especially bad about the squealing to listen for? Extra loud/gravelly?

Update:

...that would suggest a real problem?

Update 2:

That should say drums...not rotors.

Update 3:

Fresh shoes on old rotors.

Update 4:

Dammit, I did it again. Fresh shoes on old drums.

Update 5:

Thanks for the replies. I know new brakes squeal, but apparently this is worse than ordinary. I had them upgrade to better shoes to reduce the squeal but after the replacement the are super loud.

The squeaking started when they took asbestos out of brake shoes...... that was one amazing material which the Congress took a dislike to. Unfortunately you just have to put up with it. I don't imagine it's going to hurt anything. I might drive you nuts.
