Herbs & spices. Silent "H" or not?

When I was a kid, the "H" in herbs was silent. Nowadays, some pronounce the "H" and some do not.

For most people in Britain the "h" in "herb" is pronounced. Only a few upper-class or considerably lower-class (yes, really! At both ends of the social scale, but not in between.) people say "erb".

I gather that many people in the USA say "erb", no matter what their social class. But if you are in the USA, your note implies that habits are changing.

Silent "H" in the word, herb. If Herb is someones name (for instance, Herbie), then you would pronounce the "H".

It depends if you are British or American. British speaking people including Australians pronounce it with the 'h', whereas Americans say it without the 'h'.

Both are okay but "urb" is listed before "hurb' in the dictionary indicating is the preferred, more common pronunciation. The proper name is never "urb," being as it is a diminutive or Herbert.
