Do they make a combination light switch with a plug in, that will replace a typical light switch only?

    Sure, there is the traditional http://amzn.to/2dSRnXS

    and Decora http://amzn.to/2dSV9Am

    Most older homes don't have the correct wires at most switch locations to be able to add a receptacle. If you remove the switch from the wall and there are just two wires, white and black, then you just have the hot (the white), and the switch leg (black) going back to the light. No neutral. You can't connect a receptacle to that because then the power used by the outlet would have to run through the light to get back to neutral, splitting the voltage between the two devices (as Tony described, although it does sound like he has too much time on his hands, sorry Tony).

    But you may have a neutral, 2011 and newer editions of the National Electrical Code in section 404.2(C) now actually require a neutral at the switch for lighting loads, making the switch loop I described above illegal in new installations.

    If you remove the switch and find two (or more) whites all connected together, and blacks and a bare ground attached to the switch then you could install a receptacle at that location. I know there are people who would rather attack others than research and learn the truth, but it is possible.

    Of course they do. But if you want to use the plug outlet then you'll need a hot source AND a neutral source in the switch box along with proper grounding.

    It's possible to use the switch to control the plug as well.

    Just for fun (messing with my brothers head) I installed one of those dual switch/outlets on a circuit that had no neutral. In other words, the plug acted like a switch. When he plugged the vacuum cleaner into it and turned the vacuum on - the hall light would come on and the vacuum would do nothing. So he switched it on and still the vacuum did nothing. But that's because that particular circuit was an interrupt style system. Power doesn't go to the switch it goes to the light socket. The neutral is what is switched.

    To answer your question, yes, they do have them. Go to Lowe's and check out their electrical department.

    Yes, hard to find but there are outlets where the top is a switch shaped like an outlet and a regular outlet below. But the problem is you may not have a way to make the outlet work unless there is regular wiring in the box. Switches just use one side of the two wire system, so there would not be two wires to connect the outlet.

    Yes, they sell a light switch combo outlet that fits a standard single gang outlet plate. As long as you have a constant hot wire in the box (the 2nd 2 way light switch termination box has no constant hot wire to feed an extra outlet off of).

    These combo switch / outlets are available in both SPST and SPDT for two way remote light switch control situations.

    NO, because a typical box for a switch doesn't have the required neutral for an outlet. It isn't the switch/outlet combo that matters. It is the wiring to the box.

    By the way, Tony likes to spout BS to sound intelligent. What he claims to have done to his brother is physically impossible.

    The device is quite common BUT to make the receptacle work you need the neutral in the location and this is not how a house is usually wired. The only solution is to have a qualified professional electrician do the work.

    Yes. I have one in my tool shed. As others said, you do need to have the correct wiring. {My electrically talented brother installed it.}

    Sure you just have to wire it correctly when replacing
