In a nutshell the film is about General Maximus Decimus Meridius who is betrayed by the son of the Emperor. His position of General is reduced to a slave, and he works his way back into society to avenge the death of his wife and child.

It's supposed to be taking place during the reigns of the Roman Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Aurelius died in 180 CE. Commodus, his son and co-emperor, died in 192.
