    I didn't expect you to grow into the person you have become.

    It should be "amazed" instead, and I think the person who said it meant well, but has a problem with choosing the right words. As it is it means that, "I did not expect you to go as far as you have gone."

    It means that the following phrase is unexpected.

    I didn't expect the person you have become.
