The average gain in lean muscle mass during a year for experienced trainers is 10 pounds, which is less than one pound per month.

Arthur Jones, in the Colorado Experiment with Casey Viator, made exceptional gains far greater than the average however, Viator, who was training following his recovering from an injury and associated medical problems, was gaining back muscle mass he had lost due to the same said injury and illness.

Gaining lean muscle mass involves a proper and well balance nutritional plan, high intensity training in a progressive weight resistance program that does not include over training and adequate rest and recovery time to allow growth.

You might be able to gain 50 pounds of body weight in a year however, most of it will not be lean muscle mass.
