    Red onions are the best onions because of their uses. If I see one more yellow onion in a salad, I am going to cry, and it's because it's a yellow onion, not out of sadness. Yellow onions that are raw are disgusting. Yellow onions are only good when sautèed. A red onion that is raw tastes amazing. Additionally, a raw red onion in a sandwich can complement the sandwich, but a yellow onion will fall flat.

    Depends on the application: If in a soup/stew-yellow onions. if in a salad-red or sweet. If in a stir fry-yellow or green. Generally, yellow onions can be rather strong, particularly that which is called a Spanish onion. While red can be strong as well, it is more desirable in a salad or on a burger. Green onions are milder in taste and quite versatile. And sweet onions like Vidalias, can be eaten like an apple.

    I like green onions to just eat plain.

    I cook with all types of onions...

    White onions in Mexican food.

    Red onions raw on burgers or salads

    Yellow onions for most other things.

    I also sometimes use shallots and leeks for a milder onion flavor.

    For the record, there are no ranch onions, hard onions, or sour onions.

    There ARE green, yellow, red, sweet (vidalia), shallots, pearl onions, and a few others

    It depends on what I'm going to use it for. If it's raw on a hamburger or in salad, red onion. For onion rings or onion soup, sweet onions are better. Cipolle borettane for pickling in balsamic vinegar.

    Each type of onion has it's purpose.

    Yellow onions are for cooking, not eating raw.

    The best raw onion is the sweet Spanish.
