Is the overall popular vote a moot point?

If popular vote was the emphasis on winning the election, wouldn't campaigns from both candidates be run in a completely different manner?

Yes, of course; if Presidents were elected by a nationwide popular vote, then we'd have very different campaigns. For example, both candidates would have spent a lot more time and money campaigning in southern California, New York, Texas, etc., instead of the states they did (New Hampshire, Iowa, South Carolina, Nevada, etc.).

A popular vote would break up the stranglehold of the 2 party system. It would also mean that Chump would have actually benefitted from the 33% of Californians vote, and Hillary would have benefitted from the 43% of Texans that voted for her, etc.

True.Any campaign base their strategy on getting the Elector vote going in. The "popular vote" is just an interesting statistic.
