asphalt roof disposal?

I am replacing my roof. I am wondering how to dispose the old roof? Some people suggest to use a small 10 yard dumpster. Cant I just use a U Haul truck or pick up truck and drive it to the dump? btw, 1600 square feet roof

Don t rent a truck, U-Haul or ? will charge you for damage done unless you re very careful. Look at Craigslist for a local garbage hauler, a lot of times they will just park a truck there for a day while you tear the roof off. A dumpster is also an option depending on how long you plan on taking but 16 squares should be fairly quick.

16 squares of 3 tab asphalt shingles weighs a couple tons ...double that if you have two layers of old roof or architectural shingles weigh more too so it is usually best to rent a dumpster but you can haul it away with a U haul van or truck...may take a couple trips or more with a pickup to not overload it. Plus it's a lot more work to manually unload the truck at the dump versus a dumpster that just gets picked up when the job is done. I did my 13 square roof using a U haul truck to dump the old shingles at the local yard and saved some money versus dumpster fees and I put a lot of shingles in small garbage cans to make it easier to unload. See what fees the yard may have for dumping old shingles and the extra labor to go back and forth, unloading time, U haul rental, etc...and compare to dumpster costs.

1600 square foot of asphalt roof will not fit in a 10 yard dumpster. I had 1200 square feet of roof barely fit into a 16 yard dumpster. You have to tell the rental agency what you plan to use it for. Now you have to have a pretty big truck to offset the landfill cost for asphalt. They will know what you put in at the dump. There is guys there that oversee it.

Don't see why not. We have a dirt driveway and as the old came off my friend removed the nails and we used the old shingles on the driveway. They last quite some time and gave a good base for the new gravel which otherwise would have soon sunk into the clay.

Sure you can, you probably need to make a couple of journies to the dump yard I don't see why not probably works out cheaper.

Do like contractors ... throw it around your foundation before back filling.
