How to record from a digital TV using an analog VCR?
I have a recently purchased HDTV that automatically receives the digital broadcasts. I do not have cable TV of any kind; I just watch the local broadcast channels.
How do I use my old analog VCR to record TV shows? All of the instructions I've found so far talk about hooking the VCR up to the converter box, which I don't have since the TV doesn't need it.

You buy a converter box and install it between your antenna and VCR. You will probably want to put a splitter on your antenna so you can attach separate cables to your DTV and converter box.
Almost no TVs have video outputs, so there is no way to record a program "from" the TV. The VCR needs to have its own video source, and a converter box is the only cheap way to do this.
The better models of converters are no longer stocked in stores. You will probably have to get a used one off of ebay.

Cannot be done from the TV because it does not have a video output.
Assuming you're using an antenna, it could work this way:
1. Antenna to a 2-port splitter input.
2. Output port 1 of the splitter to the TV's antenna jack.
3. Output port 2 of the splitter to the input of a digital-analog converter (you'll need to buy one).
4. Coaxial output of the converter to the antenna input on the VCR.
5. Put the VCR's tuner on channel 3 and leave it there permanently.
6. AV (yellow-red-white) output from the VCR to the AV input on the TV.
You may need to review the TV's user guide to find how to connect an AV input, since many modern TVs don't have the usual yellow-red-white jack set for the purpose. But most of them do it another way, and it will be in the guide.
Having said all that, keep your expectations very modest. The video will be standard-def analog, even when recording an HD broadcast channel. If you manage to get all that stuff connected and working, you're really not going to be fond of the result. You'll be far happier with an over-the-air DVR, like a Channel Master CM-7500. Google that and check it out; it's what I would do.

VCR's are obsolete and record/playback an odd resolution: 280 lines. Your TV cannot even let you view a tape.
Amazon sells several over-the-air DVR/PVR systems that record to either a hard drive or a USB flash drive. They record both standard def channels and HD channels and will work a lot better because it uses HDMI cables.
Here is one for under $40:

AS lond as you have analog RCA output jacks on the TV, you can connect those to your VCR and record.

It is not possible to record from the TV.
You will need a converter for the VCR.
