What is wrong with my gas heater?

If I turn the fan on "auto", I can hear it start to whir and give 4 or 5 clicking noises as if it's about to start, and it repeats that over and over, but it never gets going or produces heat. The fan works, and it does react to the thermostat.

Either it's not getting gas, or the igniter is bad.

Additional information from the original questioner:

The hot water in my shower works normally, though I am uncertain that it depends upon my heater.

If it is indeed a bad thermocouple, can any ignorant amateur like me replace it, or should I hire a professional?

sounds like the thermocouple has failed they do regularly it's the flame failure safety device they cost about $15 in home depot but a plumber will charge 50 and 200 to fit it , it's a 5 minute job 3 if you are quick
