Can someone answer my question about this phone (see photo)?

At the top of the hand set, there are six rubberised ribs. Does anybody know what these are for?

The black Mitel phone, not the white one.

    Just an attempt to make an office phone "ergonomic"... the ridges prevent sliding when holding phone with shoulder...
