Socrates's refutation of hedonism in Plato’s Gorgias

Hedonism: the view that the good = pleasure, and the bad = pain.

1. Good people are good because of the presence of good things in them (and bad

because of the presence of bad things).

2. In many situations, cowards experience pleasure and pain to the same degree

as brave people.

3. In many situations, fools experience pleasure and pain to the same degree

as intelligent people.

4. So if pleasure = the good, and pain = the bad, then the cowardly and stupid

are as good as the intelligent and brave.

5. That implies that there is no real difference between good and bad people. They

are equally good and bad—which is absurd.

By abstaining we learn that the mind can and does control things in ways that are healthy for it if it can realize. By abstaining from the physical pleasures the mind exercises its dominant and determinant will. A dominantly determinant will is what is needed more than anything else according to Socrates. Even if, at the time such a thing was considered separate from the body and even given names such as mind, psychological activity, personality, shadow, soul and will.
