Add the two numbers in the ratio together:
5 + 8 = 13
That's the denominator of a fraction.
8/13 of the votes are yes votes.
5/13 of the votes are no votes.
Multiply that fraction times the total votes.
8/13 * 11219 = 6,904 yes votes
You can also do it algebraically.
Let 8x be the number of yes votes
Let 5x be the number of no votes
8x + 5x = 11219
13x = 11219
x = 11219/13
x = 863
Yes votes (8x) --> 8 * 863 = 6,904
No votes (5x) --> 5 * 863 = 4,315
