Is it true that Terry Fox kept a large amount of the proceeds for himself?

I vaguely recall an incident when I was around 11-12 where my teacher was telling me that commemorating Terry Fox was a load of crap as he hardly did anything noble after he kept most of the money he raised through his charity run. How true is this, and are there any sources that can elaborate on this?

    There was another canadian runner called Steve Fonyo who was always in trouble with drugs and the law. I think he kept the money he raised.

    The guy had cancer and tried to run across Canada to support cancer research.

    There was no scandal attached to his name and that's why there is an annual run in his name and he is celebrated as a Canadian icon.
