I know its just movies and TV but it seems like its a shameful thing to have to do for money, weeeelll if your getting paid and providing a good service for your fellow man then why the hell aint ya all doing it?

In most places (in the USA) blood that is "sold" or given for money is not used for patients it is used for lab testing of equipment and testing methods.

Blood donated is used for patients. The place accepting the donations may give "points" that can be exchanged for a variety of items including a prepaid card like Visa or Master card. At certain times of year the place where I donate may give vouchers from a local business like a Fast Food restaurant or a pizza place. They may also have drawings for tickets to a ball game. But no cash is exchanged for the blood.
