I'm a Yankee, so I'm looking from the outside.
I like the idea of an upper house with some power to check and balance the much more powerful House of Commons. And I like the idea of an unelected body, as long as it has very limited powers. I don't like the idea of people getting a seat in government based on heredity. The 800 lb elephant in the room (if you'll pardon the expression) is the Queen--a hereditary position. However, my understanding is that the crown is almost totally powerless.
I think more reform might be better. I kind of like the idea of an upper house of experts in various fields, businessmen, economists, mathematicians, educators, scientists--they would be appointed by the PM. They would serve 6, 8 or 10 years, and then would resign permanently, and they must be highly educated and experienced, must go through a confirmation process, and cannot have a criminal record, must be citizens, and a minimum and maximum age.
Part of the problem with our system here in the US is that there are almost no qualifications for the highest most important offices in the land. So people can elect any old yokel or moron, OR, a snake-oil salesman with no experience or skills beyond conning masses of people.
It might be a good idea to look at the powers the body has also. They should be able to check disastrous mistakes by populist demagogues elected by misled voters. But not enough to make the UK less Democratic in a meaningful way.
My question for you is how would it be changed or abolished? Here in the US we have a written Constitution with a clearly defined process to amend--and it is very hard to do so. My understanding regarding the UK constitution is that it is unwritten. Does that make it easier or harder?

The number of Lords should be reduced to no fewer than TEN, the minimum required for leaping about a partridge in a pear tree.

If today the House of Lords, and tomorrow why not the royal family? What you ask for is a new Soviet Empire. The people of Britain have said no to European hegemony, and instead of globalism, have endorsed sovereignty, and hold fast to stability and tradition. God save the Queen!
