Instigator penalty in hockey?

Simple enough. However at the Hawks Coyotes game they gave the other player a agitator(?) penalty or something similar to that. Do you know what the correct name is?

Also watching the Coyotes & sharks in OT (3 on 3) there was a penalty against the Coyotes. So it became a 4 on 3. When the penalty expired the Sharks still had 4 men on the ice. When does the 4th man have to leave the ice & go back to a 3 on 3?

Update:

Please my question is mainly about the 3 on 3 OT W/ a penalty. When does the 4th scanter leave the ice when the penalty is up?

It is not about 5 on 4 & the man leaves the box.

Stupidest rule in pro hockey, the instigator rule. They can give a player who the ref believes intentionally started a fight on the ice during play. The ref will access a 2 minute instigator, a 5 minute fighting major, and a game misconduct. In OT, the teams play 4 on 4, 3 skaters and a goalie on each. Penalties are still called, but the rule is the non-offending team gets an extra skater. So the teams play 5 on 4, including goalies, for the full two minutes or until a goal is scored. If the penalty expires and the play is ongoing, both teams play with the 4 on 4 skaters until the first whistle when they resume the 3 on 3 skaters.

  • It's an instigator penalty and is assessed for deliberately starting a fight (usually happens when someone jumps another player for no real reason).
