Army Reserve Combat Engineers?

I am throwing back and forward the idea of joining the Army Reserves as a Combat Engineer, or joining the National Guard as an Infantryman. At the moment, I am leaning towards Combat Engineer because I think it would benefit me more while in at Army ROTC. I have a few questions. Firstly, what do you do at the Drill Weekends? Do you go in the field with all your gear? What are the current chances of getting deployed? I am more than willing to deploy. If deployed, what does an Army Reserves Combat Engineer do? Do they do everything an active duty combat engineer does? Do they go on patrols all geared up and actually engage the enemy? Lastly, do you think this is a good MOS for the Army Reserves? I know this is basically the only Combat job a reservist can have. Is it worth it?

Combat Engineers will not do anything specific to benefit you in ROTC. Your best bet would be to pick a unit close to your school with a good SMP program and supportive of ROTC. The type of unit doesn't matter. All other things being equal, an Infantry unit would be more beneficial. Infantry is the basis for all of your training until BOLC and you will have more opportunities to learn and use leadership skills.

Drill weekends will vary. You will have weapons qualification, PT tests, mandatory briefings, medical readiness, maintenance, and supply actions. Sometimes you will even do training in your specific MOS. Most Combat Engineer units won't go to the field "with all their gear" regularly. Usually, that will be during annual training. Your chances of being deployed are about zero, whether you are Guard or Reserves. If deployed, you will be expected to do the same mission as an active duty unit. Combat Engineers are NOT going to go out on patrols to engage the enemy. It really doesn't matter whether it is a "good MOS" or not. You will be going through ROTC and will be an officer. If you are wanting a combat job, your best bet is to join a Guard unit.

Source(s): SMP in a Guard NBC unit. Branched Infantry. Served in Armor units in the Guard. Transportation and Civil Affairs (Airborne) units in Reserves. Deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as Civil Affairs.

do it all in one, and triple your income too.

Go to College, and join a ROTC unit.
