Chronically anxious horse?

My neighbor's horse is completely neurotic. I'm looking for the best product to help him (The neighbor won't do anything for him on his own, but will probably take my suggestion). I've been out of the loop on horse products for years, but I'm looking for something to hopefully put in his feed so he gets it every day. Thanks for any help!

I don't know the name of it, but my sister uses a Vitamin B/Magnesium supplement for her anxious horse. I know she orders it from Smart Pak. I don't have a current catalog handy to look it up, but it shouldn't be that hard to find.

You might need to look for more of a source for the anxiety. Is this horse alone in a pasture? Does this pasture have grass still or a round bale to nibble and keep busy? Does he get a lot of grain? Is he stalled constantly? Is he being ridden or worked regularly? My horse can definitely get a little nutty in the winter when he is stalled more and I'm riding less, but if I can keep him in a routine of riding or ground work he is so much happier. Horses want a job to do. If he's just standing around all day thinking about how bored he is he will be anxious.

Our pastures right now are nothing but dirt and mud so we throw hay to our horses during the day while they are outside. There are two horses that literally just pace the gate until it's time to come in because there is literally nothing to do except fuss with each other and their owner rarely rides them. Assess this horse's situation - maybe he needs a buddy, more hay outside, or even some toys. Our geldings LOVE playing with rubber traffic cones and jolly balls outside- it's hysterical to watch them.

Bottom line- anxiety in horses usually just means they aren't busy enough, instead of offering meds or supplements, see if he is willing to let you work the horse a few days a week if you are interested.

Snake oil is not going to help and may hurt you a great deal.

This has been mentioned a few times here already.

Buy the horse and fix the training issues or just live with it.

The problem is the owner, not the horse.

Good luck, God bless you for caring.

There is no magic pill that will do this horse any good. This horse, most likely, is how he is because the owner made him this way. No medication or supplement can fix that.

Be kind with your neighbor. . .It is important to have decent relationships with them. No matter whats going on with their animals, family sanitation mental health etc.

Try magnesium supplement if it works at all it will work in a week. Likely its the horses training. That is more complicated.

    Be Nice no matter what.

Snezzys answer is the correct one if you have litigious neighbors. . .those you stay away from to be safe.

Why is this your concern? Do you have any idea at all what causes the problem?

What would happen to you if, after the horse eats your recommended mouse milk, he has an even worse episode of the crazies and injures someone? Would anyone think it might be your fault?

    Here's what you can do:

    1. Buy the horse.

    2. Have the problem diagnosed.

    3. Apply the correct treatment for the problem.

If it's not your horse it's not your problem.
